Désirée, Kennebec, Monalisa – really "guate Erdäpfl" from the Mount San Vigilio

Potato weeks, 2.10.2016 – 16.10.2016

Early in the morning, when the cable car quietly makes its way to the Mount San Vigilio, you meet them now and then, the Schötzer, the guardians of the Mount San Vigilio.

While Helena Schötzer takes on special occasions in a “Tracht” or a “Dirndl” one knows Josef Schötzer entirely by keeping up the tradition of the blue south tyrolean apron. With a deep voice he loves to tell stories of the good old times.

During the cold winter months they spend their days in Lana. When the first snow on the mountains starts to melt and spring arrives timidly into the country, it pulls them back up into their Mount San Vigilio home at 1700 meters.

With much love and passion they keep the old church in perfect conditions and as a result of their effort also the new path of faith on the Mount San Vigilio was established.

In autumn, when the needles of the larches turn gold-yellow the potato weeks begin at the Mount San Vigilio. Really “guate Erdäpfl”, as Helena Schötzer calls them, grow here on rich soil. In August these potatoes are being harvested from the field situated below the Monte San Vigilio church.

Since 1991 Josef Schötzer maintains the so called “Herrenwiesel” field, which in earlier times has served as a support of the curator of the Pawigler church. His potatoes accompany delicious dishes prepared during the potato weeks from the 2nd to the 16th October at the stube ida at the vigilius mountain resort.

A delicacy not to be missed.
